The memory of the lockdown. A series of large-sized paintings in which the artist Andrea Baruffi interprets the dark period of the lockdown in a surreal, ironic and colorful way. His contemporary and alternative figurative painting reflects the optimistic and rejuvenated spirit typical of America, his country of adoption, in which "you can" is the verb that if you want everything is possible!
The work My lockdown playing, cm 150x100 acrylic and oil on canvas, represents the pictorial cycle performed during the lockdown period in 2020. These works are deliberately ironic, surreal and colorful almost to desecrate that dark moment and convey confidence and optimism. The artist Andrea Baruffi, Italian and American architect by adoption, lived in New York for over 40 years absorbing very much, both in his work as an advertising graphic designer and in his artistic field, the surreal optimistic spirit of America where, if you want, anything could happen.
Andrea Baruffi
Andrea Baruffi was born in 1949 on the Bolognese hills. After attending the artistic high school, he embarks on the path of architecture and graduates in Bologna. Almost immediately he left for the United States and lived in New York for over 40 years, making an amazing career in illustration first and then in communication.
He works for the major American magazines and the most important agencies such as Young & Rubicam, Gray Advertising… Become Creative Director for Dover Corporation Annual Report. He curates the creative campaign for Artemide of America.His graphic creativity and artistic qualities give him enormous notoriety.
Since 1993 he has devoted himself intensely to painting inspired by the works of Edward Hopper. He begins a first cycle of important works representing his New York of the 50s totally in black and white with large formats (Central Station, Queen Mary, West side, Central Park, the street games of Harlem ...) The success is guaranteed ! Participate in the most important exhibitions from New York, Miami, Singapore.
In recent years his pictorial cycle has undergone a great change. It becomes more ironic, colorful, surreal and the lock down gives it an even greater and more fun creative charge! It is his way of living this sad Society in the most cheerful way possible.
